Last night, How I Met Your Mother‘s casting experiment paid off nicely for the comedy. The show - which is not yet on the network’s renewal list - earned its best demo performance ever. By night’s end, CBS was tops in the 18-49 group while ABC was #1 in total viewers.
8pm
- Week 2 of Dancing with the Stars (20.5 million, 5.0/13 in 18-49) was the evening’s most-watched program.
- Approximately 10.6 million watched Britney Spears’ cameo on How I Met Your Mother (4.5/12).
- The Big Bang Theory (8.6 million, 3.4/10) was down a half million from last week.
- A House* repeat (7.6 million, 2.7/7) fared better than the replaced Canterbury’s Law.
- My Dad is Better Than Your Dad (4.2 million, 1.2/3) continues to die a slow death.
- Gossip Girl* (1.1 million, 0.5/1) was off just a tad.

For the first time in quite a while, it appears we may have had more original episodes on TV last night than repeats. Although CBS’ comedy lineup saw strong numbers, it couldn’t outmatch the debut of Dancing with the Stars. ABC ended up winning the evening in the viewers and demos.
8pm
- Dancing with the Stars (5.5/15 in 18-49) waltzed its way to 20.9 million.
- The Big Bang Theory (3.7/11) kicked off the evening with 9.1 million; How I Met Your Mother (9.7 million, 4.3/11) soared by 3 million from last week.
- Canterbury’s Law (5.7 million, 1.7/5) dropped by nearly 2 million.
- My Dad is Better Than Your Dad (4.7 million, 1.5/4) shrunk by 2.2 million.
- Gossip Girl* (1.3 million, 0.6/2) was actually up by 100,000.

Pic of Britney Spears on How I Met Your Mother

Here’s your first glance of Britney Spears during her upcoming appearance on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother. If this shot does not scream overacting, I don’t know what does. (You can see another one of her scenes, after the jump.)
Mark your calendar for Monday, March 24 to see if it gets any better than this.

This Week on TV (3/17-3/23)

(You can view TV Envy’s Post-Strike Television Schedule here.)
MONDAY (3/17)
- Dancing with the Stars (ABC, 8pm): Tonight’s Season 6 premiere focuses only on the men. I think it’s safe to say Julianne Hough won’t be making it a three-peat with Adam Carolla.
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 8pm): New episode. “Sheldon and Leonard are asked to a physics conference to present their work together.” I’ve always wondered - if this show were to air on any other day, would it be half as successful?
- How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8:30): New episode. “Ted decides to live life like Barney on St. Patrick’s Day.” You don’t want to know what they use as their lucky charms.
- Two and a Half Men (CBS, 9pm): New episode. “Charlie teaches Alan how to break up with a woman.” I hear hiring prostitutes can make a woman leave you.
- The Bachelor (ABC, 9:30): Season 12 premiere. “Bachelor Matt Grant, a 27-year-old British financier, meets his 25 would-be soul mates.” Apparently in America, you can finally afford to woo twice as many women as you can in the UK.

Monday Ratings: CBS Slips Past NBC
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Drama, Music, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, The Bachelor, Ratings,
FOX’s new dramas failed to muster up much attention. The network fell in third last night behind CBS and NBC.
8pm
- The Bachelor special (7.7 million, 2.6/8 in 18-49) had a narrow victory in its hour.
- The premiere of Canterbury’s Law (7.6 million, 1.7/5) had to settle for second place.
- The New Adventures of Old Christine (7.5 million, 2.7/7) did 2 million better than last week’s Captain episode.
- My Dad is Better Than Your Dad (6.9 million, 2.1/6) didn’t do much better than most.
- How I Met Your Mother* (6.7 million, 2.2/7) was off a tick from last week.
- Gossip Girl* (0.5/1) trailed far behind with 1.2 million.

Spears’ Cameo Forces Silverstone to Quit
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, CBS, NBC, Scrubs, Gossip,
Yesterday, we told you that Britney Spears would be making an upcoming appearance on How I Met Your Mother. Unfortunately, her announced entrance was followed by someone else’s exit.
Alicia Silverstone, who was supposed to be involved in a romantic storyline with Ted, has opted out of her guest role. It seems Alicia didn’t like the idea of Spears’ cameo overshadowing her her spotlight. (The pop singer was slated to play her receptionist.)
Sarah Chalke - Dr. Elliot Reid from Scrubs - will now be stepping in to fill the Clueless star’s shoes. Unfortunately, her schedule will only allow her to be in one episode….not several, as was intended for Silverstone. This most likely means will not know the identity of the show’s ‘mother’ anytime soon.

Britney Spears on How I Met Your Mother
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, CBS, Gossip,
Days after news of an Alicia Silverstone arc, we’re learning of much talkier plans for How I Met Your Mother. The CBS comedy will soon be embracing another guest star: Britney Spears.
Unlike the storyline involving Silverstone, the part planned for Britney is not considered to be signficant. The singer will also be playing someone other than herself. (I’m guessing her character will still have some sort of twang and head gestures.)
Sadly, this stunt casting follows an appearance by Paris Hilton on My Name is Earl. Apparently viewers will turn on their TVs if producers bring their internet stars to the TV.
No date has yet been announced for the Spears cameo. Meanwhile, Hilton will be running around Jason Lee‘s dreams come April 3rd.

Could Alicia Silverstone Be How I Met Your Mother’s Mystery Woman?
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, CBS, Gossip, Rumors,
Based on some fine detective work, TV Guide is speculating that the ‘mother’ of CBS’ How I Met Your Mother may in fact be….Alicia Silverstone.
That educated guess is based the Clueless star’s several episode arc with ‘father’ Ted later this season. (And it’s not like any love interest every sticks around for long on that show.)
If it isn’t Silverstone, let’s hope the writers introduce the mommy quick. If CBS doesn’t renew the show (it’s not yet on the fall schedule), we may never find out.

- A special episode of The Moment of Truth (3.6/10) had 8.6 million tuning in.
